To The Ones Who Guide Us. πΈ
The Day of the Master.
Breaking down the name: μ€μΉ (seuseung) = Teacher / Mentoring Master. (A very respectful term, more profound than just “instructor”). μ (ui) = Possessive marker (’s). λ (nal) = Day. “The Master’s Day” β celebrated on May 15th to express profound gratitude to teachers and mentors who shape our lives.
Why May 15th?
The date wasn’t chosen randomly. May 15th is the birthday of King Sejong the Great (μΈμ’
λμ). He is considered the ultimate “teacher” of the Korean people because he created Hangul (the Korean alphabet) so that commoners could read and write. What better day to honor all teachers? ππ
A Flower of Respect.
The μΉ΄λ€μ΄μ
(carnation) is the universal symbol of gratitude in Korea. Just like Parents’ Day (μ΄λ²μ΄λ ), students present carnations to their teachers. In the past, students would pin them directly to the teacher’s chest, but today, beautifully folded paper carnations or small bouquets are more common. π
The Song That Makes Grown Adults Cry. πΆ
Every Korean knows the song μ€μΉμ μν (Grace of the Teacher). The lyrics: “The grace of our teacher is as high as the sky…” It is sung in classrooms across the country on this day. Hearing 30 kids sing it to you is guaranteed to make even the toughest teacher tear up. π₯Ί
Letters Over Luxury.
In 2016, Korea passed the Kim Young-ran Act (an anti-corruption law). This strictly banned giving expensive gifts or even coffee to current public school teachers. The result? The return to the most meaningful gift of all: A beautifully written μνΈμ§ (handwritten letter) expressing pure gratitude. π
We Never Forget.
μ€μΉμ λ isn’t just for kids. Adults often contact or visit their μμ¬λ (eun-sa-nim / respected former teachers). Alumni associations organize reunions to treat their old mentors to dinner. Seeing former students succeed is a teacher’s greatest reward. π
Pouring Respect. πΆ
At these reunions, pouring a drink for a former teacher is a profound sign of respect. Using two hands to pour the creamy λ§κ±Έλ¦¬ (Makgeolli), the alumni say, “Thank you for guiding us.” The warmth of the Makgeolli matches the warmth of the memories shared. A perfect toast to lifelong mentors. πΆβ¨
The impact of a teacher lasts forever.
Have you thanked your mentor today? πΈ π
