The Royal Game of Arrows
Slide 1

The King’s Target Practice 🏹

While the commoners played wildly physical games like Jegichagi and Ssireum in the dirt πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ…
The Kings, Queens, and highest-ranking noblemen (Yangban) of the Joseon Dynasty engaged in a much more elegant, civilized, and maddeningly difficult game inside the palace walls! 🏯
This is 투호 (Tuho / Arrow Throwing) 🎯!
Slide 2

Target Acquired 🎯

The rules are unbelievably simple βš–οΈ.
You stand exactly 10 to 15 paces away from a specialized bronze jar called a νˆ¬ν˜Έν†΅ (Tuho-tong) 🏺.
You are given an incredibly long, blunt wooden arrow.
Your goal? Toss the arrow underhand in a perfect, high arc so that it falls perfectly vertically down into the ridiculously narrow mouth of the jar! 🏹⏬
Slide 3

Eyeing the “Ears” πŸ‘‚πŸ’₯

Getting an arrow into the main, wide mouth of the jar is hard enough πŸ₯΅.
But true Tuho masters aim for the κ·€ (Gwi / Ears)! 🐘
These are two tiny, incredibly narrow tubes sticking out of the sides of the jar. Historically, if you landed an arrow inside one of these tiny side-tubes, your score was vastly multiplied! It requires absolute, impossible sniper precision 🎯!
Slide 4

Do Not Break a Sweat πŸš«πŸ˜…

Tuho was not just a game; it was a physical manifestation of Confucian etiquette (Ye / 예) πŸ“œ.
The Yangban scholars abhorred violent physical exertion πŸ›‘.
You were strictly forbidden from throwing aggressively overhand, slouching, leaning forward, or revealing frustration 😑. The arrow must be tossed underhand with absolute grace, poise, and stoic control, maintaining a perfectly straight posture! πŸ§β€β™‚οΈβœ¨
Slide 5

The Ultimate Drinking Game πŸ₯‚

Despite its elegant rules, Tuho was fundamentally the world’s most sophisticated drinking game! 🍻
It was played constantly at royal banquets 🎊. The loser (who missed the most arrows) was immediately forced to consume a massive “Penalty Drink” (Beol-ju / 벌주) of fermented rice wine as punishment, to the immense amusement of the King! πŸ‘‘πŸ·
Slide 6

The “Jester” Punishment 🎭

If you lost incredibly badly against your peers, the punishment was often worse than drinking 😭!
You were forced to undergo hilarious public humiliation 🀑.
Historical records show that losers had to wear funny hats, paint their faces absurdly, or violently dance and sing like a jester to entertain the winners while the game continued! πŸ’ƒπŸŽΆ
Slide 7

The Palace Challenge 🏰

Tuho has virtually disappeared from the modern Korean home because NOBODY has room for a giant bronze vase in their tiny apartment! 🏒🚫
However, if you visit the royal palaces (Gyeongbokgung or Changdeokgung) today, massive modern Tuho rubber setups are provided absolutely free for tourists in the courtyards! πŸ“Έ
Try it! It is infuriatingly difficult! 😑🏹
Slide 8

The Victor’s Wine πŸ†

Want to recreate the authentic royal Joseon Dynasty experience with your friends? πŸ‘‘
Set up a Tuho game (or a simple bucket) in the park! The rules of the King still apply! βš–οΈ
The first person to miss all their throws must buy a round of the most premium, traditional, royal-quality JS Brewery Makgeolli 🍢 for the elegant victors! It’s the law! βš–οΈπŸŒΎ

The Perfect Arc 🏹✨

Do you think you have the elegant grace and aim to land a huge arrow in a tiny jar from 15 feet away? Or would you be drinking the penalty wine? 🍢🎯 Let us know below! πŸ‘‡
