The Chaos of the Lunar New Year π²
In America, families play Monopoly and end up screaming at each other π π.
In Korea, during Seollal (Lunar New Year), the entire extended family gathers on the floor to play μ·λμ΄ (Yutnori) π°π·π².
It is arguably the oldest, loudest, most violently competitive, and most beloved board game in Korean history! π

The Ancient Dice πͺ΅
How do you move? You don’t use 6-sided dice! π²π«
The entire game revolves around throwing four specifically carved wooden sticks (Yut / μ·) simultaneously into the air π¬οΈ.
Each stick has one flat side and one round side. Your movement is entirely dictated by how many sticks land flat-side-up! ππ

The Run of the Animals π
The entire scoring system is based on the historical speed of livestock! π
Do (1 Flat): The slow Pig π (Move 1 space)
Gae (2 Flat): The trotting Dog π (Move 2 spaces)
Geol (3 Flat): The running Sheep π (Move 3 spaces)
Yut (4 Flat): The speeding Cow π (Move 4 spaces + throw again!)
Mo (4 Round): The galloping Horse π (Move 5 spaces + throw again!)

The 29-Station Race π
The battlefield is the μ·ν (Yut-pan / Board) βοΈ.
It is a simple diagram representing the 28 constellations in the sky surrounding the central North Star β¨.
The goal? Your team must navigate all four of your tokens (Mal / λ§) completely around the board and return them to the finish line before the other team! πββοΈπ¨ It sounds simple, right?

The Vicious Take-Down π₯
This is where the holiday screaming starts π€¬!
If you roll carefully and land your token exactly on the same square occupied by an enemy token… you Catch them π₯!
The enemy’s piece is violently removed from the board and instantly sent back to the absolute beginning no matter how close to the finish line they were! ππ
(Bonus: You get to throw the sticks again!)

High Risk, High Reward π
If your token lands on a space already occupied by your own token, you form a tower called μ
κΈ° (Eopgi / Piggybacking)! πΌ
From then on, those two tokens move as a single combined unit, essentially allowing you to win twice as fast β©.
The terrifying risk? If the enemy “Catches” your stacked tower, both pieces are sent back to the start simultaneously! π±π

The Heartbreak Stick π
Modern Yut sets include an evil addition π.
One of the flat sides has an “X” drawn on it. If you throw a “Do” (1 Flat), but it happens to be the ‘X’ stick… it becomes a λΉ½λ (Back-Do) β¬ οΈ!
Instead of moving forward one space, you are forced to move exactly one space backward βͺ! It is a devastating, rule-breaking disaster that can ruin a perfect run! π₯

The Holiday Bet π°πΆ
Yutnori is almost never played just for funβit is always played for a stake! π΅
Often, the losing team is forced to pay for the evening’s dinner, or perhaps the holiday drinks π».
There is nothing quite like sipping an elegant, incredibly creamy cup of JS Brewery Makgeolli πΆ while watching the opposing team throw a disastrous “Back-Do” and lose the entire game! ππΎ
